HISK Open Studio

The Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) is Belgium’s premier post-academic institute for visual arts, offering international artists-in-residence a dedicated platform for critical research and studio practice. Each year, the HISK Open Studios event invites the public into these private creative environments, opening a dialogue between the resident artists and the international art community.

Across two consecutive editions, our visual identity for HISK Open Studios translates the physical act of opening studio doors into an evolving, dynamic graphic language centered on space, expansion, and visibility.

For the 2022 edition, we played with variable typographic spacing—shifting from tight, condensed letterforms to wide, open layouts—creating a high-contrast structure that elevated the artists' imagery. Building on this dialogue, the 2023 identity explored openness through motion and scale: animated image grids expand and multiply across the screen, filling the browser window and embodying the concept of taking up space.
